One of the cool things about being a gringo in Mexico is that a lot of Mexicans you randomly meet will tell you their stories about being immigrants in the United States. Mexico: where ordinary dudes like taxi drivers have crossed the Sonoran desert 5 times. Once a year to come back and visit his family while working at an Aunt Sarah’s in Minnesota (you guessed it, washing dishes and saving up to buy his taxi).

That taxi ride was in Mexico City, but I am in the state of Sonora right now, which is famous for steak, copper and a desert which claims the lives of migrants walking across it to enter the United States.
